Published: 25 June 2024

Peter Walsh, CEO, Transport Infrastructure Ireland has welcomed the appointment of new Programme Director of MetroLink, Dr Sean Sweeney.

Dr Sweeney has been appointed to lead the largest infrastructure project in the history of the State following an extensive national and international recruitment competition.

"I am very pleased to welcome the appointment of Sean Sweeney to the position of Programme Director for the MetroLink project,” said Mr Walsh.

“The appointment followed an extensive national and international recruitment competition, carried out on behalf of Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TIl) by Newsom Consulting.”

“In addition to his professional accomplishments, Seen is known for his collaborative and engaging leadership style. He is also a recognised expert in the procurement and delivery of large capital projects. "

As our new MetroLink Programme Director, Sean will be responsible for leading the development and delivery of this project, which aims to provide a new high-frequency, environmentally friendly public transport service.

"Through its connectivity with mainline rail, DART, Luas and BusConnects, MetroLink will transform public transportation in Ireland, addressing critical issues such as congestion, accessibility and sustainable growth."

With over 30 years' experience in the delivery of large-scale construction projects, Sean is former Chief Executive Officer of City Rail Link in Auckland, New Zealand and was responsible for the development and delivery of New Zealand's first metro line.

A recognised expert in the procurement and delivery of large capital projects, he studied engineering at Wellington Polytechnic and Auckland University and later gained a Doctorate in Construction Economics from Melbourne University.

He worked in the infrastructure industry overseas before returning to New Zealand in 2018 to lead City Rail Link Ltd, a transformative underground rail link in Auckland's city centre and New Zealand's biggest-ever transport infrastructure project.

His appointment to lead the MetroLink team comes as the project faces into a number of critical milestones including the potential granting of a railway order and Government consideration of Decision Gate Two, which if granted, will sanction the start of the procurement for the main infrastructure contracts.

As the new Metrolink Programme Director, Sean will be responsible for leading the development and delivery of this programme, which aims to provide a new high-frequency, environmentally friendly public transport service for Dublin.

Through its connectivity with mainline rail, Dart, Luas and BusConnects, MetroLink will transform public transportation in Ireland, addressing critical issues such as congestion, accessibility and sustainable growth and providing a frequent, reliable and sustainable public transport system.
